Who are Northside's Servants? |
DescriptionsMinistersMinisters are also known as preachers or evangelists. Their job is to publicly preach and teach the good news (or "gospel") of Jesus Christ. Our ministers do not use the title "pastor" or "reverend" because in the churches of Christ, there is no distinction between "lay" members and "clergy." As Christians we are all priests (1 Peter 2:9). EldersElders oversee the spiritual aspects of the local church. The term "elder" refers to age as well as spiritual maturity. Also called "bishop," "overseer," and "pastor," elders are called to watch over the spiritual needs of the local church. They are to "tend the flock" by means of watching out for false teachers and making sure that only sound doctrine is taught. The qualifications for elders are found in I Timothy 3:2-7. DeaconsThe deacons handle the physical aspects of the local congregation. The word "deacon" means servant, waiter, or attendant. Deacons serve the members of the church by handling the care of the members, the finances, building care, and so on. The qualifications of a deacon are found in I Timothy 3:8-13.
